To celebrate one year of helping women find balance, we sat down with one of our first ever Eve customers, to find out how she’s doing one year on, and give her the chance to review her Eve hormone test experience.
The story she shared with us is an inspiration to us all, and proof that a lot can change in a year!
Here is Michelle’s story.
Where it all began
It was in her early 20’s that Michelle began to notice signs of hormone imbalance, including extreme fatigue and very irregular periods. She would often have only 3-4 periods each year and had no idea when they were on their way.
She sought advice from medical professionals who explained that she was likely experiencing a PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) hormone picture characterised by raised androgenic hormones (e.g. testosterone), irregular periods and ovarian cysts.
She was also advised that if she was planning on having children, she should start trying sooner rather than later, as it would likely be more difficult for her to fall pregnant.
10 years later
Michelle fell pregnant with her first child after 18 months of trying and help from conventional fertility treatment.
A few years later when trying for a second child, the same treatments unfortunately weren’t having the same effect.
Michelle was on the verge of opting for IVF treatment (costing around $14,000) when she decided to try another approach first. It was this decision that led her to the BePure Clinic where she had an initial consultation and decided to give hormone testing a go.
As it turns out, her timing with our launch was impeccable. Michelle purchased her Eve Hormone Test in our pre-sale and took her test soon after.
Michelle’s Hormone Test Results
Michelle’s rest results showed:
Michelle’s oestrogen levels came out nicely in the middle of the optimal range, and her oestrogen showed to be metabolising really well with an optimal ratio of the 2-OH-E1 (more friendly pathway). This was a huge win for Michelle.
Michelle’s progesterone levels were lower than optimal, indicating that she was likely not ovulating (anovulatory cycles). Suspected lack of ovulation is a huge indicator of infertility. If ovulation isn’t happening, there’s no egg for sperm to fertilise.
TESTOSTERONE & OTHER ANDROGENS:
Michelle’s androgens were elevated, in particular etiocholanolone and androsterone; two androgen metabolites which have been shown by research to be linked to high levels of stress and inflammation within the body.
Identifying the low progesterone, high androgen picture going on was key as this imbalance was likely driving a lot of the symptoms Michelle was experiencing and preventing her from falling pregnant.
The recommendations Michelle was given in her report were centered around the goal of naturally lowering androgens and increasing progesterone levels to support healthy ovulation and fertility.
- Ensuring balanced blood sugar levels through eating quality fats and proteins with each meal;
- Eliminating dairy and gluten from her diet and loading up on anti-inflammatory foods and supplements such as turmeric and omega-3s (through BePure Three);
- Getting plenty of essential nutrients to support ovulation. Michelle started taking BePure One, Magnesium Restore & Zinc Restore to ensure optimal nutrient stores.
In addition to her Eve recommendations, Michelle also started getting acupuncture to support ovulation and fertility. She was already nailing the basics of eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle and these small changes had a huge impact.
Three months after testing and implementing changes, the fertility treatment worked and Michelle fell pregnant with baby number 2.
“This was the 10th round of the medication over the course of 3 years, and one last attempt before trying IVF.”
When reviewing her hormone test experience, Michelle noted that the results and recommendations gave her a plan of attack with a goal in mind and helped her to see how subtle changes can make significant differences in a relatively short period of time.
“Testing gave me the whole picture of what my hormones were doing and a confirmation of how important it is for me to really focus on and manipulate my diet to help achieve my goals. I was eating well, exercising regularly, practiced decreasing stress but there was still something missing - and it was clearly just that low grade inflammation that goes with my type of PCOS.”
